What is wrong with MSN search?

June 2010

What is wrong with MSN search? Microsoft has vowed to beat Google at the search game. Can they do it?

First of all; MSN are missing the point with their current search engines. They need to look at the search engine business from a different perspective. It is a job of "organizing the worlds information", to do that you can't just search what exists and expect that the results are what the user is asking for. You can't count on creative marketing to convince users that Microsoft are the best. It isn't that simple this time.

When serving up search results you have to look at EVERYTHING. Tracking data entry, such as; what are people typing into the search box. You have to analyze the provided results and what doesn't show up as a result or what is the users revised search string and how common is this search revision. You must analyze what they click on, do they click back to find a better result and if so, what was the last selection for that search result, if relevant then it was successful or perhaps not.

Microsoft need to track what the world is doing, collectively, and define a way to track what keeps the masses happy. Treat the Internet search process like one giant dynamic application that changes by the second, minute, hour, day, month, season and year. Sounds like a big task but why do you think Google are buying up as much "dark fiber" (unused fiber optic lines) in the United States as possible? They are doing what they state is their goal; "To organize the worlds information"

I will never underestimate Microsoft, however, it seems to date they are fighting an uphill battle. A massive financial initiative is required, on top of an Internal culture change, if they ever want to compete with Google on the search front.

You only have to look at the Top Ten Search Engines list from June 2010 to see Microsoft's search engine market share to realize they are not winning the minds of searchers.
